A Secret To Motivation: Discipline Beats Motivation
You don’t need to feel motivated to take action. All you need is the knowledge of what action is right for you to take, and the discipline to execute that action regardless of whatever you’re feeling.
Many people make the mistake of thinking that they should feel motivated before they take action. This mentality is wrong and is the reverse of what really builds up momentum, and thus motivation.
People often know what is the right thing to do. They know that they need to work if they want to achieve something, they know that they need to study if they want to learn something, they know that they need to train if they want to get good at something. People know it’s important to exercise, eat healthy, and get enough sleep for optimal health, they know they should avoid drugs for the good of their health, they know they should focus on what’s important in life instead of wasting their time and energy on trivialities. But even though so many people know what is the right thing to do, they don’t do it.
People don’t do what they know they should do because they succumb to their feelings. They are emotionally weak. It feels easier to sleep in than to get up early and work towards their goals, so that’s what they do. It feels easier to be lazy than to be diligent, so they are lazy.
